The conductors and guest artists who direct the Norman Children's Chorus are recognized leaders in children's music education.

Sandy Knudson, Artistic Director and Conductor

Sandy Knudson teaches music at Adams Elementary School in Norman and was nominated as Teacher of the Year at her site in 1997. She holds a M.M.E. and Kodaly certification from the University of Oklahoma. Sandy has presented workshops on state, local and national levels and has served as President of Oklahoma Kodaly Educators. She has been guest conductor for honor choirs in Louisiana and Missouri and has served as conductor of Circle the State with Song festivals throughout Oklahoma.

Sandy is currently the Artistic Director of Norman Children's Chorus which has made three appearances as the Children's Honor Choir in Tulsa at the Oklahoma Music Educators Association conference in 2003, 2005, 2008 and 2010. She served Oklahoma Music Educators Association as State Chair of Circle the State with Song and the all-OMEA Children's Chorus for two years and was responsible for commissioning pieces by David Brunner and Nick Page. With Norman Children's Chorus, she has commissioned pieces by Malcolm Dalglish and Francisco Nunez. She has completed two summers of study with Doreen Rao in the Choral Music Experience Institute.

Master teaching is a priority for Sandy; she often has student teachers, field experience students and methods' classes coming to work with or observe her elementary students. In November of 2003, she received National Board Certification in Early and Middle Childhood Music. Since 1990, she has taught Solfege I and II in the University of Oklahoma Kodaly summer certification program in Norman and Tulsa and at Central Missouri State University.

Leah Nellis

Leah Nellis is the music specialist at McKinley Elementary School in Norman. She studied at the University of Central Oklahoma and at Cameron University, where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Music Education. She earned a Kodaly Certificate and Master of Music Education Degree with a Kodaly Emphasis from Silver Lake College in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. She has taught elementary music for twenty-seven years and was named Norman Public Schools Teacher of the year for 2002. Her minor in Humanities reflects her varied experience in literature and history. She performed the role of Buttercup in H.M.S. Pinafore with Cimarron Circuit Opera Company and has been a soloist with the Western Oklahoma State Community Chorus and the McFarlin United Methodist Church Chancel Choir in various works including Handel's Messiah and Rutter's Requiem.
